What it is.

Detached structures standing within thirty feet of the home. Garden sheds, workshops, pergolas, gazebos, playhouses, carports, and stacked storage all count.

Why it matters.

A shed is usually built lighter than the house, and it is often full of exactly the things that burn hardest. Once it is alight it is no longer a small structure, it is a sustained fire burning close to the building, delivering heat and embers to the wall and the roof for as long as it has fuel.

What good looks like.

Combustible outbuildings kept beyond thirty feet, or built and maintained to the same standard as the house, with the ground between them clear of continuous fuel.

How it is judged.

10 CCR 2644.9(d)(1)(B)1.d addresses combustible structures within thirty feet of the home, so carriers who price on wildfire risk are required to account for it.

What we will ask you.

"Is there a shed, pergola, playhouse, or similar structure within thirty feet of your house, and what is it built from?"
